In Turkey, a spontaneously arranged lunch taught us a lesson more crucial than part tolerances: true delivery means giving peace of mind.
It was July, and the days were hot. Our colleagues, June and Ivy, after a long overnight flight and only a few hours of rest, arrived punctually at the client's office first thing in the morning. The meeting was intense. They detailed the trial production progress for the new project and went back and forth with the client's engineers, confirming the tolerance requirements for several critical dimensions.
By the time the meeting ended, it was almost noon. But the scheduled factory tour had to go on. They politely declined the client's suggestion to "grab a quick bite" and headed straight to the next factory. The journey was long, and by the time they reached the factory, deep in the industrial zone, it was almost 2 PM. They hadn't eaten since morning, and hunger mingled with fatigue.
The factory manager was waiting. Skipping the pleasantries, he led them inside. Amid the roar of machinery, the manager, Hakan, pointed to an assembly line. "That connector you supplied last time goes right here. It fits perfectly, first time." The discussion then turned pragmatically to the new order underway, focusing on production capacity and delivery timelines.
In the photo, Hakan is holding the optical component that was the focus of their discussion. He examined it against the light for a long moment, then smiled at June. "The precision is excellent, just like the drawing." Those words instantly washed away the fatigue of their early morning travel.
When they finally wrapped up the details, Hakan glanced at his watch. It was much later than he expected. He paused, picked up his walkie-talkie, and spoke a few words in Turkish. Turning back to our team, he said apologetically, "We got so focused, I lost track of time. I've asked the canteen to prepare something for you. Please, it's just a simple work meal, but don't refuse."
It was anything but "simple."
Steaming hot soup, freshly baked bread, and authentic Turkish desserts. "We Turks cannot let our guests discuss business on an empty stomach," Hakan said. At that moment, what warmed up was more than just their stomachs; it was a genuine gesture of care that soothed the weariness of their long journey. The tiredness and sleepiness they felt moments before were replaced by warmth and gratitude.
This lunch was more than just a meal; it was a valuable gesture of goodwill. It reminded us profoundly that in international cooperation, trust and understanding often bridge distances more effectively than contract clauses. As we firmly believe, true partnership is built on mutual respect and support.
The photo from that day is formal, but the smiles on our faces are genuine. Because this was more than a successful visit; it was a lesson from a client like this: reliable delivery is the most powerful language in business.
